  My elderly friend has a Ford Focus vehicle with only 91,000 kms on it. She took her car to the Humber Ford dealership in Stephenville and was given a very high estimate on the cost of the work. In addition, they asked for a huge parts deposit of $800.00. I have never been asked for a deposit and it is not standard practice to do so. Because she is on low-income disability, she asked if she could make a payment plan but they told her they didn't do that. So she asked if she could have the work done bit by bit but they told her that all of these issues needed to be dealt with before they would release the car. When she wanted a second opinion before going on with the work, they demanded a 30% re-stocking fee and threatened to refuse to give her the car keys if she did not pay it. They claimed that all of the auto parts were special order and that was why they needed to charge a re-stocking fee. They also threatened to call the police if she did not pay the re-stocking fee before she took the car for a second opinion. She should have called the cops on them as it is against the law to intimidate and threaten people and to take a car which is not theirs. All she wanted was a second opinion! I took the estimate to my mechanic ( not in Stephenville) and he said it looked like a money grab and it sounded like they were trying to bully her and that she should sue them if they did not allow her to take the car for a second opinion. We also phoned around to NAPA, Carquest, and Canadian Tire in Stephenville. We found all of the parts in Stephenville and for hundreds of dollars less than the Ford dealership. They may have ordered the parts from elsewhere but they didn't need to. We had not told them that we were not going to use their garage; all we said was that we wanted a second opinion and then we would decide where to have the work done so I don't even know why they immediately wanted to apply the restocking fee unless they already knew that their parts prices were far too high, or maybe some of the estimated repairs were not even required, or that their labour costs are higher than any other garage in the area. I phoned around Stephenville to verify the cost of the parts and the labour costs and I found that most garages in the area have labour fees of $60/hr to $70/hr as opposed to their fee of 83.95/hr. And none of the other garages or parts places said that they charged a re-stocking fee. Only one other garage said they might charge a re-stocking on special orders but certainly not 30%!! My friends and I are all shocked. We have never, ever, heard of such poor treatment of a customer. DO NOT GO TO HUMBER FORD in Stephenville.
